Obstetrics and newborn care in the field
Children are born even under field conditions. The labour room of the GRC Emergency Hospital provides obstetrics, gynaecological care and neonatal medicine — every day, alongside ongoing emergency operations. The proximity to the operating theatre is deliberate: in the event of an emergency caesarean, every minute counts.
More than 1,200 children have been delivered at the Red Cross Emergency Hospital in Rafah since May 2024 — around 13% by caesarean section (compared to 32% in Germany).
Obstetrics in a Red Cross Emergency Hospital means being prepared for complications that would be routine in a stable clinical environment — under conditions where transfers to specialised facilities are often not possible.
